The reduction of Charleston, South Carolina, by the British, in 1780, was the subject of numerous songs and poems. The subjoined specimen was written by an officer of the royal army, and first pubÂlished in a ballad-sheet, set to the tune of the " Watery God."

King Hancock l sat in regal state. And big with pride and vainly great,
